Black Cats
Everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask....
Black Cats have played a major role in superstitions, folklore and mythology for centuries. Depending on where in the world one looks, (and when!), black cats portend either good or bad luck. Most of us are very familiar with the bad luck superstitions...witches, evil omens and scary path crossings! Not many of know of the good luck they bring!
Below are our adoptable black cats and some examples of the myths and superstitions surrounding these beautiful cats...along with photos of some of our adoptable residents.
The first King of England, Charles, had a black cat. He was convinced that the cat was a lucky charm. He made sure this cat was guarded day and night. The cat died the night before Oliver Cromwell’s troops arrested the King and beheaded him. Kitty couldn’t agree more...he too is a lucky charm! And he will do everything he can to keep Cromwell’s troops from taking your head!
The Celts thought black cats were reincarnated beings able to divine the future. In fact, cats of all colors were thought of as strong protectors. Who wouldn’t want a black cat, like Attica, who tells you the future and protects you at the same time?!
In Scotland, back in the olden days, a strange black cat on your porch was a sign of upcoming prosperity. Nowadays, we don’t really want your cats out on the porch but we do know that Maxine could bring prosperity to you!
In England, fishermen's wives kept black cats in their homes while their husbands were away at sea. They believed that the black cats would prevent danger from happening to their husbands while they were away. Luella understands danger, that is for sure. Now that she is safe, she totally committed to keeping your loved ones free from harm!
It is said that a black cat crossing your path is bad luck, but letting one in your house is good luck. Which is great news for Penelope. She is a total lap cat, so inside a house, on your lap is where this gorgeous green-eyed gal belongs!!
Reba is a dog-cat! She runs up to you as soon as you arrive. She loves to lay in your lap. She loves feather toys. She is a bundle of joy! Still a kitten at 2 years old, Reba is ready to come home with you and be your best friend...this is a special cat!
In most parts of the world it is thought that a black cat walking towards you is a certainty of good luck coming your way; should the cat stop and turn away before it reaches you, fair fortune is not to be yours. Boone thinks if a Black cat is coming your way, you should just invite the cat in. Boone is ready to come over now.
Meet out little man Castor! He is about 10 weeks old and sweet as the day is long. With this long face and high ears he reminds us of Ancient Egypt.

In Japan, it is actually considered good luck to have a black cat cross your path! Pooh loves Japan! And Pooh is good luck whether she crosses your path or sits on your lap or just hangs out near you!

Black cats were once treated like royalty in the homes of English sailors, who believed that keeping them happy would ensure fair weather when they went to sea. They became so high-priced that few sailors could afford them! Eva is certainly a cat of royal lineage...just look at those green eyes!
